Ladies Night IV is this Saturday night – September 28th

ln4This Saturday night at the Lounge (September 28), the store is hosting our next private Ladies Night event —- basically the guys stay home and the store hosts a social for female fans and professionals to relax and network.

Our last three evenings had been a lot of fun (or at least I’ve been told that as I can’t be there!) and the hosts tell me this should be no different.

The event will run from about 7pm until Midnight. Some refreshments provided by Visions of Utopia, the store, and the evening’s co-hosts.

We wanted to give everyone going the heads up that Dorval Films will be coming in between 7 and 8 to do some coverage of the event to run on their web series COMIC BOOK CULTURE. The reason for the heads up is that the two people covering the event for Dorval Films are guys, and they’ve previously covered the LOW SOCIETY and CYBORG 009 book launches/art shows at the Comic Book Lounge. They promise to be out by 8 after conducting interviews with only those people willing to be interviewed / consent to be on camera. This will be a great chance to promote the positive aspects of this community event to a larger audience.

Also, makeup artist and co-host Jennifer Maciel Bolton tells me she will be bringing her makeup kit.

Speaking of art shows, Marcus To’s Cyborg 009 artwork is still on display at the Lounge and will be up on Ladies Night this Saturday night.

Last weekend we wrapped up Fan Expo Canada for another successful year, and buzz around town is that they had well over 110,000 attendees over four days. It was an exciting weekend for the Lounge, what with our booth at the show, Kevin participating in the Canadian Superhero Renaissance Panel on Friday, JSA_poster_2013_LGRachel participating in the Golden Age of Canadian Comics panel on Sunday and the 9th Annual Joe Shuster Awards being presented on the Saturday night at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Rachel will be enjoying a restful vacation from September 3rd to 19th and we hope she has a great time. Mike Bothelho and Kellam Templeton-Smith will be filling in for her while she is away.

Our next evening event in September is the CEREBUS: LOW SOCIETY book launch on Saturday, September 7th with special guests Rob Walton (editor), Gerhard and the many talented participants in the Comics Lab Project. We’ll have copies of the book well in advance of the distributed copies, courtesy of Aardvark-Vanaheim.

On September 13-15 we’ll be exhibiting at the MONTREAL COMIC CON (look for us at booth 429) and Kevin will be accepting CGC Signature Series requests for the event. If there is something you would like us to bring to the event for you please let us know in advance.

On September 20-22 it looks like Kevin will be driving down to Columbus, OH for Wizard World Ohio to complete the Stan Lee signing that was originally schedule for Fan Expo (unfortunately Stan was not feeling well and had to leave early) and as a result he will be accepting some CGC Signature Series requests for that event as well.

On Saturday, September 28th we have LADIES NIGHT IV, one of our most popular reoccurring events.

What’s up with the Comic Book Lounge + Gallery? Late July edition

I… HUNGER!
IMG_2246[1]This past Saturday we held an art show and signing with artist supreme Leonard Kirk to celebrate the release of the first issue of the Age of Ultron spin-off mini-series THE HUNGER. Poor Ultimate Rick Jones just wants to grab a bite to eat at the Burger Shack but he keeps being called away by the Ultimate Watcher and he experiences the same time shift that other major characters experienced at the end of AoU – then a tear in the universe opens and Galactus 616 crosses over and merges with Gah Lak Tus, the predatory artificial intelligence of the Ultimate universe.

IMG_2251[1]Leonard did a great job on the art and we had a great time. The artwork is on display at the Lounge this week, but will be heading off to Leonard’s art dealer next weekend. For now it is available for sale at the Lounge. He’s even got some preview pages from issue #2 up – well worth checking out! IMG_2248[1]RENOVATING AGAIN?

Yes, we’re making some more changes… well, UPGRADES, to the retail store.

Check out this cool 9 inch Creature figure - we'll have some of these in stick on July 31.
Check out this cool 9 inch Creature figure – we’ll have some of these in stick on July 31.

Over the long weekend we are installing new slatwall pieces in the front section so we can better showcase our other products — from those awesome sketchbooks, card cases and buttons that Guerilla Printing makes, to our expanding selection of t-shirts, statues, toys and other collectibles.

Godzilla 11inch figures in on July 31! MechaGodzilla is also available.
Godzilla 11inch figures in on July 31! MechaGodzilla is also available.

We’ve got lots of fun things coming in this August in advance of Fan Expo (August 22-26), like a selection of POP figures, more board games and things like that, so we want a place to properly display these cool items.

Batman Black and White by Sean "Cheeks" Galloway in store July 24th.

It will also allows us to better support and display the work of Artist in Residence Christopher Yao and our relationship as a friend and partner of the Sean Ward Show.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The TRUE PATRIOT ANTHOLOGY TORONTO BOOK LAUNCH is scheduled for Saturday, August 10th at the Lounge. Starting at 7pm — anthology contributors Adrian Alphona, Ramon Perez, J. Bone, J. Torres, Howard Wong, Jack Briglio and more will be at the store signing copies and we’ll be displaying original artwork and prints featuring these amazing new Canadian superheroes in the gallery!

Man of Steel, Superman Unchained and some super-recommendations!

man of steelLast week, MAN OF STEEL debuted in theatres and four members of the Lounge team saw the film: myself, Rachel, Chris and Mike. Only 1 of the 4 of us really enjoyed the movie, and I am not the one who did.

Note: Spoilers may be found in the review below so be warned if you have yet to see the film and still plan to.

Personally, I have a hard time accepting Man of Steel as a true Superman film — it’s a pretty good science fiction movie about a dying planet and how a battle between two strong individuals with differing political philosophies has carried over decades to our world. A fascist Zod working for the glory of preserving Krypton vs. Jor-El, who wants to preserve Krypton so that aspects of it will endure beyond it’s natural death. On that level the film works, but in order to get to the third act, a series of really silly coincidences lead to Jor’s son Kal activating a ship that gets the attention to the surviving Kryptonians who managed to escape the Phantom Zone years before. When Earth is threatened to surrender Kal-El, Kal takes up the fight against the surviving fascist Kryptonians and battles them for the survival of his race as well as humanity.

It just so happens that Kal-El is Superman, and Superman is a beloved character of strong ideals that has endured 75 years — but very few of those ideals are represented in Man of Steel, so we end up with a Miracleman-esque battle between super-powered aliens similar to other Miracleman inspired films of recent vintage like Chronicle and Michael Bay’s Transformers movies. Unborn Kryptonians are slaughtered by Superman without much regret, and dozens of buildings crumble and millions clearly would have died in the carnage that destroyed huge areas of downtown Metropolis and Kal-El does little to move the battle away from these heavily populated areas.

Superman’s solution to defeating Zod is right out of Moore’s Miracleman, as he feels Zod cannot be redeemed. He is “forced to eliminate” his enemy by doing the same thing to Zod that Miracleman did to young Bates — and it reinforces my opinion that this not Superman, as Superman’s strength as a character is that he always finds a way to do the right thing, Zod wants him to kill him – Superman’s strength would be to find a way not to give in to his enemy’s death wish… so in a sense, Zod wins the fight by getting the death he wanted. That’s hardly a victory for Superman.

While the previous film, Superman Returns is a failure on many levels, it still understood just exactly who Superman was and what he was capable of and it had the one thing that Man of Steel sorely lacks: HEART.

The film ends with the traditional status quo established hurriedly, albeit one change is that one character knows that Clark is also Superman, so the dynamic will be confused in the next outing. Since somehow the Planet building escaped the devastation unharmed, and no one seems particularly phased by it – it’s business as usual. Would have been nice if there had been at least a memorial service and perhaps Superman could have addressed the world to explain himself and apologize for failing so miserably to protect the people of Earth and committed to being a helping hand and protector. Instead he’s back to hiding among us.

Superman movies worth watching are:

Supeman the Motion Picture

Superman II (and/or the Donner Cut)

Superman cartoons by Max and Dave Fleisher

All-Star Superman

Superman/Brainiac

****

smund_cv1_coverOn the flip side of things Scott Snyder and Jim Lee did a pretty solid job on SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #1, the third monthly New 52 Superman title. With Grant Morrison’s departure, the messup with Andy Diggle and the confusion over the direction of Superman itself, it’s actually nice to see a Superman book with some cohesion. Aside from Lee’s popular visuals, the story has great character moments and insight into Superman himself. I particularly enjoyed the scene with Lex Luthor.

I won’t recommend skipping Man of Steel the movie — you have to make your own minds up — but if you want to read a solid Superman comic, Superman Unchained is worth checking out. Although there probably isn’t a need for a third Superman title, Superman Unchained quickly establishes itself as the one Superman title you should be reading.

Other Superman books worth reading:

Superman – Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? by Alan Moore, Curt Swan and Dave Gibbons

Superman: Earth One books 1 and 2 by JMS and Shane Davis

Superman: The Man of Steel Volumes 1-7 by John Byrne, Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest by Karl Kesel and Steve Rude

Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank

We’ve also got some great compilation trades on sale:

Superman vs. Brainiac

Superman vs. Lex Luthor

Superman vs. Shazam!

Superman vs. Zod

The Amazing Transformations of Jimmy Olson

Superman: 3-2-1 Action!

Heading into April – What’s new and what’s changing at the Comic Book Lounge + Gallery

boneIt’s been a busy month, and lots of things are going on here at the Comic Book Lounge and with our partner in the space Guerilla Printing. As pointed out earlier, this weekend we are closed on Friday and Sunday for the Easter Holidays. We will be open on Monday.

Tomorrow night, March 28, it’s the end of an era at 587A College as it marks the final night for the last Toronto Cartoonists Workshop course at our location. The TCW may offer courses again in the future, but at this point there is nothing new scheduled. We’ll be working with Guerilla to get a new door sign made to mark this adjustment a.s.a.p.

yaoWith no upcoming classes Guerilla and the Lounge have been working to improve the community space to make it a bit more retail oriented and filled with fun stuff. The area will still house the Gallery portion — and currently we still have J. Bone’s Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #1 art on display (until April 1) as well as a series of cover recreation paintings by local artist Amato available.

We currently have a HUGE SALE on selected Marvel, DC, Dynamite, Boom! and IDW hardcovers and trades in the community space. We’ve been adding items to this area every week, and there are some AMAZING deals! Trades as low as $2 and hardcovers as low as $5!!!!!

sean wardOn most days of the week you will also find our artist in residence, Christopher Yao, hard at work on his various assignments and producing sketch covers. Chris has a whole selection of sketch covers on sale right now at the Lounge.

We’d also like to take the time to welcome Sean Ward to 587A College. Sean is now based in the Guerilla Printing section of 587A but is often engaging customers and staff alike at the Lounge with his ineffable wit and charm.

UPCOMING EVENTS

April has a lot of things lined up for it already. Here’s a quick overview of the next few Lounge events:

April 5 – Rock Testament art show and Industry Night (8-11pm)
April 6 – The 12 Hour Comic Book Marathon (11am-11pm)
April 13 – Ladies Night II (7pm-Midnight)

We do have some plans for the upcoming Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, May 4) and the Comic Book Lounge will be exhibiting at two upcoming conventions in May and June:

Ottawa Comic Con – May 10-12
Niagara Falls Comic Con – June 8-9

Also, keep in mind that the Taste of Little Italy Street Festival is scheduled for June 15-17. That means that College Street will be blocked off to vehicular traffic between Bathurst and Ossington.

Has it really been a year?

‘Twas a mere 12 months ago that, with the closing of landmark shop Dragon Lady Comics, that we — with some duct tape and a quickly conceived plan — went about keeping a comics presence alive in Toronto’s Little Italy. The Comic Book Lounge + Gallery has changed a bit since the day we moved the first fixtures in (inherited from Dragon Lady).

Here’s a before and after shot of the space from the same perspective looking in from the top of the stairs —- the top photo was taken on February 6, 2012…. the lower was taken on February 6, 2013.

The Comic Book Lounge and Gallery officially opened it’s doors on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Come in and celebrate our first anniversary this Saturday (Feb. 9)!
