Heading into April – What’s new and what’s changing at the Comic Book Lounge + Gallery

boneIt’s been a busy month, and lots of things are going on here at the Comic Book Lounge and with our partner in the space Guerilla Printing. As pointed out earlier, this weekend we are closed on Friday and Sunday for the Easter Holidays. We will be open on Monday.

Tomorrow night, March 28, it’s the end of an era at 587A College as it marks the final night for the last Toronto Cartoonists Workshop course at our location. The TCW may offer courses again in the future, but at this point there is nothing new scheduled. We’ll be working with Guerilla to get a new door sign made to mark this adjustment a.s.a.p.

yaoWith no upcoming classes Guerilla and the Lounge have been working to improve the community space to make it a bit more retail oriented and filled with fun stuff. The area will still house the Gallery portion — and currently we still have J. Bone’s Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #1 art on display (until April 1) as well as a series of cover recreation paintings by local artist Amato available.

We currently have a HUGE SALE on selected Marvel, DC, Dynamite, Boom! and IDW hardcovers and trades in the community space. We’ve been adding items to this area every week, and there are some AMAZING deals! Trades as low as $2 and hardcovers as low as $5!!!!!

sean wardOn most days of the week you will also find our artist in residence, Christopher Yao, hard at work on his various assignments and producing sketch covers. Chris has a whole selection of sketch covers on sale right now at the Lounge.

We’d also like to take the time to welcome Sean Ward to 587A College. Sean is now based in the Guerilla Printing section of 587A but is often engaging customers and staff alike at the Lounge with his ineffable wit and charm.

UPCOMING EVENTS

April has a lot of things lined up for it already. Here’s a quick overview of the next few Lounge events:

April 5 – Rock Testament art show and Industry Night (8-11pm)
April 6 – The 12 Hour Comic Book Marathon (11am-11pm)
April 13 – Ladies Night II (7pm-Midnight)

We do have some plans for the upcoming Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, May 4) and the Comic Book Lounge will be exhibiting at two upcoming conventions in May and June:

Ottawa Comic Con – May 10-12
Niagara Falls Comic Con – June 8-9

Also, keep in mind that the Taste of Little Italy Street Festival is scheduled for June 15-17. That means that College Street will be blocked off to vehicular traffic between Bathurst and Ossington.

THE ROCKETEER Experiences a “Hollywood Horror”!

Continuing their relationship with Dave Stevens’ high-flying hero, IDW Publishing is pleased to announce a brand-new Rocketeer miniseries for 2013!

Fans of Cliff Secord’s aeronautic acrobatics will be treated to THE ROCKETEER: HOLLYWOOD HORROR! Written by Eisner and Harvey Award winner Roger Langridge (Thor, Popeye, Snarked!) and illustrated by Eisner nominee J. Bone (Batman/The Spirit), Hollywood Horror is another action-packed chapter in the saga of comics’ favorite flyboy! As an added bonus, legendary comics superstar Walter Simonson has signed on as cover artist!

“You can count the really great superheroes created since the 1960s without taking your shoes and socks off, and The Rocketeer would have to be somewhere near the top of that very short list, so it’s a great privilege to be writing his adventures,” said Langridge. “And I’m particularly thrilled to be working with J. Bone on the art chores. He’s definitely an artist’s artist, in the best possible sense. We’re working hard to give this story our own personal twist without losing the classic Rocketeer tone, so you can expect plenty of fiendish schemes, famous cameos, derring-do, pretty girls and (of course) thrills galore!” he continued.

“Roger has given me so many terrific characters from the world of The Rocketeer and old Hollywood that drawing each scene excites me to get on to the next; and the next,” said Bone. “I enjoyed my initial taste of drawing the Cliff and Betty in The Rocketeer Adventures #4 so much that I’m thrilled to be drawing them again!”

Always caught in the middle, it’s a pulp thrill ride when Cliff finds himself embroiled in a dark mystery in the seemingly picturesque heart of Hollywood’s golden age! He may be neck-deep in mystery and mayhem, but it wouldn’t be a Cliff Secord caper if his sweetheart, the stunning Betty, weren’t steamed at him!

For fans of high-altitude adventure and on-the-ground intrigue, there’s simply no substitute for The Rocketeer!

Has it really been a year?

‘Twas a mere 12 months ago that, with the closing of landmark shop Dragon Lady Comics, that we — with some duct tape and a quickly conceived plan — went about keeping a comics presence alive in Toronto’s Little Italy. The Comic Book Lounge + Gallery has changed a bit since the day we moved the first fixtures in (inherited from Dragon Lady).

Here’s a before and after shot of the space from the same perspective looking in from the top of the stairs —- the top photo was taken on February 6, 2012…. the lower was taken on February 6, 2013.

The Comic Book Lounge and Gallery officially opened it’s doors on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Come in and celebrate our first anniversary this Saturday (Feb. 9)!

New Hours, New Staff at the Comic Book Lounge

Our new outdoor sign will change the College Street landscape forever!
Our new outdoor sign will change the College Street landscape forever!

As we head into our second year of the Comic Book Lounge + Gallery, we’re making a few changes.

You may have noticed we’ve redesigned and recoloured the logo, courtesy of  Darwin Santos of Guerilla Printing. We decided we should align the colour schemes of the Lounge and Guerilla since we share the space, and we wanted something spiffy to adorn our new outdoor sign(!).

It’s taken a year, but we will finally have some outdoor signage on College (aside from our door sign natch), so we won’t be Toronto’s best kept comic store secret for long now…
