Update for the week of May 22-29

CAPTAIN CANUCK IS BACK – First issue available May 27.

Captain Canuck is a reboot of the classic Canadian comic book hero created in 1975 by Richard Comely and Ron Leishman. This all-new series re-imagines Canuck as a kinetic and accessible 21st-century icon. Born of the true north and tested in war, Captain Canuck is thrust into battle at the head of the global crisis intervention agency called Equilibrium. He must find his way as warrior, leader, and ultimately, hero to save humanity from the machinations of Mr. Gold, Blue Fox, and the even more menacing forces that watch from the shadows.

Copies are available of the regular ($3.93 after discount) and blank sketch cover variant ($6). We have one copy of the Cameron Stewart available for $10.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD THE FIRST ISSUE TO YOUR PULL FOR NEXT WEEK.

Providence #1 (Avatar Press) – First issue available May 27

In his most carefully considered work in decades, Alan Moore deconstructs all of Lovecraft’s concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history.

Both a sequel and prequel to NEONOMICON, PROVIDENCE begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of HPL flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America. Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience. The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison it to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of horror.

Moore has designed every cover, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. There are no ads, all 32 pages are written by Moore, and Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages. The entire work is already written, intricately crafted to tie the most nuanced threads together over the breadth of the series. Painstakingly researched, meticulously produced, this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago: this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be. Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD THE FIRST ISSUE TO YOUR PULL FOR NEXT WEEK.

A-Force #1

Spider-Verse #1
Ultimate End #1 (low)While Secret Wars runs, the main Marvel titles have been put on hiatus. A few still have issues coming to complete a storyline (Uncanny Avengers, All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men).

LAST DAYS are the final issues of certain ongoing titles dealing with the events that end with the destruction of the old Marvel Universe (Punisher, Magneto, Loki, Silver Surfer, Ms. Marvel, etc.).

BATTLEWORLD is formed by the god of Battle World, DOCTOR DOOM, with power bestowed upon him by the Beyonders, when he Dr. Strange and the Molecule Man confronted them in issue #1.

WARZONES are the domains or kingdoms of Battle World. The northern territories are under the control of an appointed aristocracy of “Barons”. People do not cross between the kingdoms, but there are exceptions. There is a police force that oversees order between the kingdoms – they are the THORS. Every realm has a Thor, and the Thors answer directly to Doom and Strange. To the south there is a wall called the SHIELD that separates the peaceful kingdoms from the wilder kingdoms like those populated by the Marvel Zombies, Annihilus and Ultron.

Jonathan Hickman talks about Battleworld: http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/hickman-shines-light-on-battleworlds-secrets-in-secret-wars-2

To this world of chaos (dubbed Latverion by it’s master) come two surviving groups from the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe in rafts similar to the ones from the original SW, one is a team of heroes and one is a team of villains, and both are led by Reed Richards. Their arrival can cause Schism (the undermining of the reality Doom has created), and tear Battleworld apart – they will embark upon THE SECRET WARS.

A Note From the Owner

SS 027After a lot of consideration and a review of other properties and possibilities I have come to a decision on the future of the Comic Book Lounge + Gallery.

It is that I will NOT be opening a new retail location when we leave the current spot at the end of our existing lease in the spring, however we WILL be continuing with our subscription service and will continue to exhibit at local shows.

2014 was a rough year for me. In early 2014 we were assessing these same options when my partner of five years, Debra, passed away unexpectedly from an epileptic seizure in her sleep. At the time the fine folks at the Temple of Toys helped me delay making this decision by coming in and leasing the space for an additional year after Guerilla Printing left, but unfortunately this has not proven to be a successful decision. Over the last three years I’ve been working essentially two full-time jobs and I’ve been running the annual Joe Shuster Awards, and to be honest, I need to take things back a notch, I just don’t have it in me at this time to commit to finding, renovating and opening a new retail store. We want to thank you for your support of the Lounge over the last few years. We will miss many of the benefits of having a physical location, especially the many fun events we’ve run over the last few years, but we hope to continue working with you going forward if you choose to continue ordering with us. We will continue to sponsor certain events (not conventions) in the GTA, so we hope to have some exciting news for you on that front after we’ve taken care of these immediate concerns.

SS 049The inventory will be put into storage after 4/30. It will be available for ordering, and as show stock.

Those people who currently have pulls with us will have two options:

1. Move your subscriptions to another retail store. We can help you with this, we can recommend stores that might be a good fit for you and help you transition so you don’t miss an issue.

2. Retain your subscription with the Lounge and we can
(a) arrange for delivery to your home or work, whichever location works best for you or (b) you can pick up your books by appointment on select days and times in North Toronto. This will be the new Comic Book Lounge + Gallery, but it will be less of a retail location and more of a drop-in centre by appointment, or (c) pick up at local conventions and special events.

Those people who choose to transition to our online ordering service will be given additional perks, discounts and specials. Delivery service in the GTA will be free of charge. We will have more on this as the details are finalized.

While we are disappointed to see one chapter end, we are excited about the future of the Comic Book Lounge in this new incarnation, and while we hope you will continue to work with us going forward, we do understand if you decide not to.

Thank you for your support of the Comic Book Lounge.

Comic Book Marathon – Special Edition: Saturday November 1, 2014

In January 2014 we lost our dear friend Debra Jane Shelly to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Please join us for a Special Edition of the Toronto Comic Book Marathon in her honour.

The TORONTO COMIC BOOK MARATHONS are held several times a year, organised by Keiren Smith of Ty Templeton’s Comic Book Bootcamp, sponsored and hosted by THE COMIC BOOK LOUNGE & GALLERY and BACK SPACE TORONTO, bringing creators together in a community event to make their own comic story, to work together, to inspire each other, to network…producing a page an hour!

The event is open to all who are passionate about creating comics. You may register as an individual or a team. If you wish to collaborate with someone but don’t have a partner, we can assist you in finding one.

**IMPORTANT: HOW TO REGISTER AS A CREATOR OR SPONSOR**

We will be using the event to raise money for Epilepsy Toronto, so please consider making an optional donation when registering.

Space is limited so be sure to register if you wish to participate. Supporters of participating creators do not have to register and are welcome to attend!

CREATORS

Please email backspacetoronto@gmail.com with the subject line “Comic Book Marathon”. Indicate in your email whether you will be participating alone, with a partner (and their full name) or if you wish to be partnered with another creator and would like our assistance finding one (let us know if you are a writer seeking an artist or vice versa). We will send you a confirmation email, along with further details (including set-up information, regulations and tips).

SPONSORSHIP

Donations of food and other refreshments for the duration of the event are greatly appreciated. Please email us at backspacetoronto@gmail.com (subject line “Comic Book Marathon Sponsorship”) and we would be happy to discuss an event partnership with you.

Ladies Night Returns – Saturday, August 23rd – 8PM-11PM

70sdcsuperheroeswIt’s the return of one of our Signature events at The Comic Book Lounge & Gallery, Temple Of Toys and Back Space Toronto.

Bring your fab nerd attire,
Bring your girlfriends,
and prepare yourself for Ladies Night at the Lounge!

Toronto’s premiere event exclusively for female fandom. A chance to hang and network with your fellow nerds the Saturday before nerd prom!

As always, the guys stay home and the shop becomes a female friendly space.

There will be plenty of opportunities to hang out and network with fellow fans, and to browse at the Comic Book Lounge and Temple of Toys. We’ll have a Wii set up for anyone in a competitive mood, and people should feel welcome to bring materials and use one of the tables in the Back Space for crafting activities, or gather a group of friends and play a board game from our selection of available games (or bring one of your own).

This event is dedicated to Ladies Night Co-Founder Debra Jane Shelly (1974-2014).
